Cooking for 50 people – buffet menu ideas?
Hi all! I’m planning my daughter’s first birthday party, which will be held at the end of January. I’m considering cooking all the food myself in hopes of saving some money, instead of using a caterer.
I could use some ideas for a good winter menu. I have already put into consideration a big pot of chili with a side of corn muffins, as well as trays of veggie and meat lasagna. I will also probably do a big green salad. I’m just not sure if this will work well, or if I should go for other things.
What would you guys cook in the same situation (on a budget please)?
sounds like you got a great start, lasagna you can make the night before. veggie platters and dip should be easy enough, might wanna try for a cheese platter and crackers too. you might also want to try doing a pasta salad, its also something you can make the night before. man for 50 people your fridge is gonna be jammed lol. ummm, you could make cookies or cupcakes, cake, just more stuff you can make ahead of time for desserts, or even just buy em if you feel your going to be overloaded cooking stuff.
a ham might be a good thing to do too, buy some mini rolls and slice the ham all up maybe get some cheeses and some pickles and let people put together their own sandwiches, mini ones. those mini rolls you can usually but in bulk pretty cheap.
with lasagna there you could pair it up with some meatballs in sauce, just another thing you can make the day before, just need to heat it up the day of the party and you dont need a huge thing of sauce if your not doing pasta, its just to flavor up the meatballs, besides they can also be used to make those mini sandwiches. can do the same with sausages.
the whole point is your going to have plenty to do on the day of the party, and shouldnt be overloaded cooking the day of. i would do as much as possible the day before so you can enjoy with everyone else.also important, write everything down you plan to make and make sure to write a list for the store so your not making 5 trips cause you forget anything, planning ahead of time will help alot for such a big party.
