Seafood Menus
How should a vegan reply to a written dinner invitation where the only menu choices are beef and seafood?

To make matters worse, the dinner is for animal shelter workers and administrators who should have already been sensitive to this issue years ago. It always embarrases me when I have to ask the kitchen staff to throw something meatless on the plate, then it gets worse when my plate comes out earlier or later than everyone elses with food that was never made available to anyone else.

The same way that you would reply to a VEGAN invitation. The invitation is not for dinner, but for your presence at the event. Dinner is merely a side-event. What would happen if you were invited to a VEGAN dinner where everything served was something you disliked or were allergic to?

You do not go to the event for the dinner, you go to the event for the EVENT. Therefore, your acceptance or declination should depend upon THAT and NOT on the dinner to be served.

I go to events where I do not know what is on the menu… and my father always said I was a very picky eater. I also have several “food sensitivities” (wheat, beans, chocolate, nuts, citric acid, etc) which can make eating a tricky thing for me. But I do not turn down the invitation on the basis of, “OMG, will I have anything to EAT there or not?” I GO because the people/organization who invited me WANTS ME to attend!

If I do not find anything I can eat, or little, I eat what I can and then, when I return home from the event… I EAT AT HOME! So far, I haven’t starved to death by not eating at a dinner. I will “play with” my food, I will “pick at” my food… and when I return home, I make up for it with a sandwich or piece of cake. Hell… I have enough “excessive nutrition” (yep… a doctor once called fat that!) to be able to skip a meal and still live to tell about it.

Eat something BEFORE going to dinner to stave off the hunger pangs while you are at the event and “playing” with the food served…. especially if you expect difficulties due to your choice of being a vegetarian. Oh… but don’t bring your own… that is uncouth.

Have a polite day.
