Dining Room Furniture

I want to change the finish of my Dining room furniture. How can I do this?
I have high gloss furniture in my dining room. I’d like to make it matte, or at least get rid of the high gloss. And of course, I’m looking for easiest (I have to do this myself) and cheapest way (I have very little to spend on this). Do I have to remove the high gloss varnish (if i did, could I just leave a little of the finish on it?) or can I just put some sort of clear matte finish on it?
my husband works for sherwin williams, and if you stop in a local store, they will answer any question you have. they will tell you exactly what to do, and what to buy.
